Pranlal
Bhogilal’s Vintage And Classic
Car Collection
India, until the mid 20th century was
a land of royalties and small kingdoms,
spread all over the country, where there
was a rich regional culture and unbroken
traditions. The royalty was associated
with pomp and pageantry which exhibited
their taste, wealth and their penchant
for good life. As technological advancements
was introduced in all fields including
modes of transport in the 19th century.
After the industrial revolution in Europe,
the royalty was quick in adopting such
changes which showed their progressiveness
and affordability. Along with changing
times, with the advent of independence
and accession of the princely states
into Indian union, the great tradition
of royalty in India had almost come
to an end and the luxurious possessions
of the ruling princes became relics
of a bygone heritage.
Pranlal Bhogilal’s collection
takes you back to this bygone era of
the great Maharajas of India who were
known to be the biggest customers of
luxury cars in the world. Biggest car
companies in the world used to specially
make customized cars for them to suit
the needs and whims of each Maharaja
and therefore each car in this collection
has its own rich history. The museum
is situated at a place called Dastan
in Kathwada, just a half-hour drive
from Ahmedabad within a sprawling 5000-acre
estate amidst rows of lush green trees
and manicured lawns dotted with fountains
and sculptures. The place houses the
single largest and the finest collection
of vintage and classic cars that once
belonged to Indian Royalty and it comprises
of over 125 cars including Rolls Royce’s,
Packard’s, Maybach’s and
Bugatti’s. All the cars have been
preserved and restored to working condition
for future generations to see. It is
also the private collection of the third
largest land lords of India, and apart
from the car museum, the estate has
its own dairy with over 1000 heads of
fine pure bread cows and hundreds of
acres of agricultural land where organic
farming is practiced.
While Dastan houses a large number of
cars, other cars are kept at various
properties in Mumbai, Bangalore and
Kolkata. Some of these cars seen at
Dastan are known to be unique in the
entire world. |
