'State
of the Art' - Introduction
|
||||||
|
Contemporary art cannot remain esconced in the safe
confines of 'tested' and 'proven' methods. In 1988, Abhay Mangaldas and
Sonal Motla launched 'State of the Art', an experiment to introduce new
technology into the creative process. This involved use of computers,
photography as well as the latest scanning and printing techniques into
the artist's repertoire. It resulted in a set of 29 canvases that were
shown at a grand exhibition at The Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai in 1991
and later traveled to The Museum of Modern Art in Delhi in 1993. This
was a first of its kind experiment that included the most eminent artists
of the time including M.F. Husain, S.H. Raza, Akbar Padamsee, Prabhakar
Barwe, Laxman Shrestha, Manu Parekh, Manjit Bawa, Navjot Altaf and Atul
Dodiya.
