only boutique heritage hotel. It has twelve
rooms, two acclaimed restaurants, an indoor
swimming pool and gym, a banquet hall and
a retail shop within the premises.
Lonely
Planet Guide
This 1920s building (with two excellent
restaurants, Green House and Agashiye) was
once the home of industrialist Sheth Mangaldas
Girdhardas, converted into a beautiful heritage
hotel with vast, veranda-edged suites beautifully
and simply decorated, with great attention
to detail and excellent service. It's an
icon of the upper classes, and hugely popular
with Indians and foreigners alike. The new
indoor swimming pool and health club are
ideal antidotes to a day on foot. Book in
advance on-line to receive up to 30% discount.
You can also purchase the furniture or accessories
from your room.
Agashiye
Agashiye is Ahmedabad's best dining experience.
On the rooftop one of the city's finest
mansions, the lovely terrace is an oasis
of calm and peace, candle-lit at night,
a world away from the congested streets.
The menu, which changes daily, includes
dainty little snacks, a multitude of ravishingly
tasty vegetable dishes, sweets and ice cream.
Green House
This relaxed eatery has outdoor courtyard
seating and a laid-back AC room. The food
is delicate and delicious: try delicious
panki , a thin pancake cooked between banana
leaves; or divine malpura , a sweet, deep-fried
pancake in saffron syrup, topped with rose
petals. Don't leave without trying the hand-churned
ice cream.

Sawday's Special Places To Stay
Mr. Mangaldas Girdhardas,
(hence the House of MG), a wealthy Ahmedabad
philanthropist, built this grand townhouse
in 1924 - an oasis in crazy city. His grandson
has realised his own vison and now the project
is complete. This extraordinary Gujarati
family house has been beautifully restored,
and its ornamental Baroque-influenced facade
preserved - along with Italian mosaic marble
flooring, stained - glass windows and numerous
courtyards and passages; it is a place with
a surprise round every corner. The outdoor
caf'e servers Indian and continental delicacies
while the open kitchen and the rooftop restaurant
specialise in Gujarati cuisine; the food
is authentic and delicious. There's also
a banquet 'facility' and a lifestyle store,
and a ca'e and craft centre nearby - The
Mangaldas ni Haveli. Also: a film and reading
club, a lovely indoor pool and a gym, and
a cultural tour for walkers; borrow an iPod
and go. The big smart bedrooms and wrap
themselves round an inner courtyard and
come with plush bathrooms and every modern
thing. Splash out on the Kanchangauri suite
; it comes with its own swing.

Visit The House of Mangaldas Girdhardas
(houseofmg.com), if only to sample the best
vegetarian cuisine in Gujarat. Agashiye,
the terrace restaurant, is adored by visitors
and locals alike. The hotel shop sells handcrafted
home wares and unusual gifts, including
incense sticks from the Aurobindo Ashram
in Pondichery.

The
Good Web Guide
This beautiful heritage hotel is
in the heart of the great city of Ahmedabad,
in Gujarat, western India. The Mangaldas
family has restored their twentieth-century
mansion with taste and flair. It provides
a perfect place to stay when visiting one
of India's most fascinating cities.
The home page of the site provides links
to the history of the hotel and of the Mangaldas
family, online views of the luxurious rooms,
and a great deal of useful tourist information.
More adventurous travelers in India are
invited to contemplate this as a starting
point for a visit to the state of Gujarat,
which has a rich cultural history.
Ahmedabad has much to offer
One of the great step wells, the ashram
founded by Gandhi and a magnificent old
city. No visitor should miss the privately
owned Calico museum, surely one of the finest
museums of textiles in the world.
A recent GWG visitor commented on the excellent
food at the House of MG, the enormous and
beautifully decorated bedrooms and the terrific
service. Part of the fun of this hotel is
that its courtyard restaurant (vegetarian
only) is a great favorite with locals, so
that overseas visitors can savor a little
of the real India. Not to be missed.

Agashiye rated Best Gujarati Restaurant
in Ahmedabad (11/12/2008, Ahmedabad
Times)
AGASHIYE (Indian - Gujarati) Food-4.00
/ Service-3.00 / Decore-3.50
Agashiye, which means "on the terrace"
in Gujarati is a unique terrace eatery.
Set on the rooftop of one of the city's
finest mansions, Agashiye will take you
through a wholesome contemporary Gujarati
meal. The menu includes a multitude of delicious
vegetable dishes. Agashiye is all about
digging into bajra rotlas, shrikhand, malpuas
and in-house ice-creams. The menu changes
everyday and the place is a must-visit during
moonlit windy nights. A candle-lit dinner
option is also available here. Its location
opposite the Siddi Saiyed Mosque imparts
a heritage feel to the place.
GREEN HOUSE (Indian - Gujarati, Rajasthani)
Food-3.00 / Service-3.00 / Decore-3.00
Green plants beckon you to Green House.
The service is swift and the place clean,
unlike other restaurants serving Gujarati
Thali. Food is served either on green leaves
or on neatly painted plastic plates. Sample
the rich red, green and brown chutneys,
a variety of farsan or Gujarati snacks like
khaman, dhokla, haandvo and undhiyu, kadhi,
dal and a choice of piping-hot parathas,
rotis and puris. The menu is mainly Gujarati,
with a few Rajasthani dishes like dal bati
thrown in, and sweets like sheero. You can
safely drink a glass of buttermilk or some
fresh fruit juice because it's filtered
water that is used to make these drinks.
LOTUS POOL (Multi-Cuisine)(Indian, Continental)
Food-3.00 / Service-3.00 / Decore-4.00
The resturant has received the picchwai
(large paintings on cloth) look from Nathdawara
in Rajasthan. The ceiling, covered with
a digitally created lotus fresco immediately
draws your attention. You will find continental
and Indian dishes at the Lotus Pool. Sit
by the pool and enjoy the pastas and fresh
juices. You will want to come back again
and again.
